Halloween Party at Extreme Reality

We had a wonderful Nonprofit Commons Halloween Party at Common Ground! Fab Boo costumes, friends, and awesome tunes spun by DJ LilTank! I continued my disco theme for costumes in Second Life by creating "Shining Star" to remind everyone that are one no matter who they are! ArminasX made my custom particle Nova to match my dress! You just can't have enough orange on Halloween!

The 1st Question

Wow! I was a contestant on the Second Life game show, The 1st Question! Our hosts Pooky Amsterdam and Xanshin Paz, stepping in for Hydra Shaftoe, were fun and funny while making us feel welcome and very smart. Petlove Petshop helped my fellow contestants, Colossus Linden, Keystone Bouchard, and Judi Newall, get set up and comfy for the show. It was my first time center stage on Live SL TV and I learned a lot in the process, as well as, all the exciting questions had amazing answers. The audience and my peeps were there to share their smarts and wit. I really enjoyed myself and thankful that I was asked to be on the show! What a bunch of pros that are educating and entertaining as we all feel like we can be part of what makes Second Life so affective! Wow!

Graduation for University of Washington Certificate in Virtual Worlds

We did it! Our graduation was awesome! Claudia Linden posted a great story about our program on the Second Life Learning Online Blog. I had met Claudia at SLCC and it was so nice to share how we applied what we learned. I am so proud of my fellow classmates and thankful for our instructors and aids with the support of the University of Washington that had the vision to create this first of its kind program! I love being a pioneer!

I attended the 2009 Second Life Community Convention and was honored to meet the people I have been working with in Second Life, as well as, be introduced to several new friends. I taught a workshop called Inspire Engagement through Appearance and Branding and was on a panel called Common Good - Common Goals - Common Ground - Effective Immersive Social Networking with Coughran and Ethelred. Linden Prize goes to Virtual Ability

Virtual Ability won the Linden Prize of $10,000 USD to further their mission of providing resources to help people with real-world disabilities start using Second Life for them to enjoy the medical and psychological benefits offered by virtual environments. Virtual Ability Island is an amazing place with orientation resources and they have an office at Nonprofit Commons as well. Nonprofit Commons was a Finalist for the Linden Prize, something we are all honored about. Congrats to Virtual Ability!

Midterm for University of Washington Program

We had our midterm for my second term of the UW Virtual Worlds program. We toured the University of Washington BioDome sim to review each classmates work. Everyone had great plans for their plot and it was great to see how we all have different projects in mind. I built my educational center with an office, classroom, work area, gallery, and, of course, dancefloor. My theme was inspired by Japanese design. I used the lantern as a symbol of enlightenment, cherry trees mean education, poppies imagination, pearls for wisdom, and woven patterns to connect the tech with the loom. To add splashes of color, I made and posted my create crayons flags about the grounds. I really enjoyed my classmates' work as well. Everyone is very talented and clever.

Planting Roots at the UW Virtual BioDome

I received my parcel of land on the UW Virtual BioDome on Thursday! I planted some poppies and cherry trees to get started and to inspire growth. It will be great fun to see what my classmates build on our sim!

Fundraiser for Project Jason and Garden for the Missing

Another successful fundraiser for Project Jason, an organization that assists the families of the missing, and The Garden for the Missing, a project to create awareness, was held at LoveLi Mall and earn over $200 to the cause. Kelly Jolkowski, Jason's mother and founder of Project Jason, spoke about the disappearance of her son and how they support famillies with missing people. This Second Life event is a great example of how virtual worlds have real world results. Thank you to all who created and supported the event!

UW Term Final - Caelatoris

For our final project for the term, we created an event full of panelists in Medicine, Education, and Business called "Caelatoris". I was the Coordinator for the Business Session. My awesome team was Hasmik Ziplon, CelesteAngelique Zapatero, Joseph Trachtenberg, Sean Ricantaur, Michaal Kaligawa, Yari Huckleberry, Harris Adamski, and Joe Nirvana. I also had the pleasure of working closely with the other session coordinators, Jordanna Hamaski and Laurel Zenovka.

Because two of our panelists didn't make it into Second Life for our questions, Celeste interviewed Sandy Kearney, an Independent Business Researcher, and our instructor Randy Hinrichs.Our team developed awesome questions for our panelist to answer. Sandy Kearney gave us insight and encouragement of our goals in learning about virtual worlds and our place in them. Until recently Sandy could be found working with IBM as a Global Director in the areas of 3D internet (3Di) and Virtual Business. She has over 25 years experience as a Business Analyst working with complex organizations and operations, including military and civilian strategy, aviation, futures planning, and logistics.

My two guests were Bevan Whitfield, a Virtual Worlds Business and Education Specialist, and Coughran Mayo, Senior Vice President of Planning and Development for Preferred Family Healthcare, Inc. who advocates using Second Life and Open Grid.

Colorful Expansion

My friend Kittie Munro helped make the space more comfy with her couch that she let me put my hand dyed hand woven “synthesis series” fabric on the pillows. These colorful pillows are available in the shop as well. Kittie and fate visited to check out the larger space; it is wonderful to have such supportive friends about!

University of Washington Certificate Program in Virtual Worlds

Some of you know that I am earning a certificate in Virtual Worlds through the University of Washington. It is a three-term program that will explore all aspects of virtual worlds through in world lectures, guest speakers, like Logan Linden (see picture), field trips in Second Life and other VW, lots of reading, building an educational wiki, and personal project. I am one of 25 students from all over and it has been great to discover how they want to use virtual worlds in the future.

Grand Opening of the Treasured Isle Mall

I attented several World Aids Day events in Second LIfe produced by my friend Ricken Flow. He is a leader and supporter of people with HIV/AIDS in SL. Ricken is also a supporter of my efforts in SL as my awesome DJ for the weekly Common Ground networking event at the Nonprofit Commons. So much serious talent, strength, and stories in one guy who makes me laugh too when he plays his mashup "More Cowbell!" I attented some of the performances at Catcher in the Pie and the opening of the HIV/AIDS support island. The information shared at these events made it clear we all must listen, act, and care. Seeing in Second LIfe

Ethelred, Ozma, and I myself spoke at the Nonprofit Commons Friday Meeting to encourage different orgs to sponsor Common Ground each week. It is a great setting for groups to share their mission and what real world impact they have outside of Second Life.
Then we had an amazing guest, the first blind avatar in SL! The folks from Virtual Ability were there to explain the tech to assist the blind in Second Life with a seeing eye dog. It was inspiring and thrilling!

Real World Impacts from the Virtual World

The MacArthur Foundation, the USC Network Culture Project and Global Kids sponsored “Real World Impacts from the Virtual World” in Second Life. I attended the event that happened on three important sims: Foundations Sim, Justice Commons, and Aloft Nonprofit Commons.
Lots of my friends from the Nonprofit Commons were on inspirational panels. We heard from the USC Network Culture Project awardees on Real World Impact from the Public Good Community Challenge. Enjoyed a panel on Alliance Building in Virtual Worlds. Listened to a discussion on Using Virtual Worlds for Learning. Which inspired the “Birds-of-a-feather” Breakout Sessions; I attended one about online learning in Second Life. And, then we had a social mixer and dance.

Don't dream it, be it! Rocky Horror Picture Show at NPC Plush

As part of the Nonprofit Commons Halloween Party, we had three movies at Plush to watch. Buffy and I were keen to watch Rocky Horror so that we could sing along while swinging on my swing. After getting a little seasick, I passed out the Dr. Frank N. Furter pearls and had a seat as others joined the chorus. Buffy was wearing the custom skin I made for her.

Rocky Horror is such a classic and I used to watch it at The Clinton starting in 1984. The Clinton Street Theater has been showing the Rocky Horror Picture Show every Saturday night since April 1978. (It is the longest running RHPS in the world!)

I always found the message of Rocky Horror clear even if it was covered in fishnet stockings. "Don't Dream It, Be It!"

Halloween Party at Nonprofit Commons

Happy Halloween! We had party on both Nonprofit Common sims, Aloft and Plush, with trick and treating, a dance with DJ Ricken Flow, and three movies after the dance. Everyone dressed up in costume and we had a blast meeting and greeting new folks the the NPC. Terra and I did our door by door trick'n'treating as we enjoyed awesome decorations by Mel. Merc and Anika did a great job with the party, as well as, all of their support crew! We got lots of treats by the way!

Garden for the Missing

Today I visited with Ronnie Rhode at The Garden for the Missing, her personal project to create awareness. We are standing in front of the poster for Jason Jolkowski, the namesake of the Project Jason organization that assists the families of the missing. In the Garden, you will find 170 missing persons notices in a lush and peaceful setting. Take the time to visit and learn more about the 105,000 people that are currently missing in the U.S. Find out how you can help or increase awareness to support those with hope in their hearts.

After a long day of teaching Website Design, my good friend Terra Sorbet and I chilled by hitting the Rezday Sale at Ivalde. To relax even more, I did some sewing to help keep the world beautiful. I made myself a zinnia shirt for those who ask what a zinnia flower looks like. I love zinnia flowers because they stand tall from sturdy stock with compact, ultra bright petals of warm hues reaching high and wide regardless of size.

I was so pleased with our practice run of Common Ground @ Plush NPC! Our color theme was black and white and Ricken Flow was our DJ for the night. He spun awesome disco and 80’s new wave tunes for us, while taking IM requests too. We planned for an hour of merriment, but it lasted two ending with a special request of “Moondance” for Ronnie. I decided that the next few Common Ground @ NPC events are going to stay desaturated (void of color – the horror!) like the beginning and end of Wizard of Oz until our grand opening on Sept 18. Then our first color will be green sans scary flying monkeys.

Looking over the party set up. Planning and launching a new networking event at Plush Nonprofit Commons has been rewarding and a great learning experience. Several people have been super helpful in the building of the “Party Plaza”, getting the word out, and preparing the music stream. We intend to host this event every Thursday night at 7 PM SLT with a different color theme each week. Our grand opening is September 18 and we have been practicing each week to iron out the kinks. Come dancing!

Wharf Ratz

Every Tuesday Night at 8 PM SLT, Coughran hosts the Wharf Ratz Party at Preferred Family Healthcare on Aloft Nonprofit Commons. Much dancing and dialog happen between people who support all kinds of nonprofit orgs, as well as, guests who are interested in good deeds. This past week, Coughran passed out trampolines for us to bounce on after I described the springboard action of the McMenamins' Crystal Ballroom in Portland. Wheee! While being tossed in the air, I had flashbacks of the documentary I did about the McMenamins' Brew Pubs. Good times and free stout to boot!

Have you met clickclick my shoulder kitty? She likes to purr and mew to let you know you are welcome. Last night, I sported my first attempt at creating a skin with makeup like I wear in the real world. I used Eloh Eliot's skin Photoshop file and painted up my own makeup. http://eloheliot.blogspot.com/2007/12/my-psds-let-me-show-u-them.html Ahhh, I feel more like myself. Kasper wanted to show me a set of Barcelona Chairs designed by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe he found. They would be nice in our haus!

NPC Awareness

Last night was a party for create awareness about all the great nonprofic groups working in SL at NonProfit Commons Aloft (NPC2). Live music, dancing, and insight about the amazing work people are doing inworld for the real world. Black Swan

When I think of the Black Swan, I dream of Swan Lake, my all time favorite ballets. I saw it for the first time when I was in the second grade with my mom at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. Folks from the Rezzables and several Second Life fashion designers show off their talents at the Black Swan Sim. I didn't know that Radiskull would be there! Luckly, I was wearing a dress I designed that has my sweet cherry blossoms. I think he likes sweet things...

Exhibit

This is an real world exhibit that my husband and I did this July. We did our first piece together, save videos, with the affordable art buttons. The exhibtion contains a soundtrack, paintings, and photographs by my husband. My artwork includes the block sculptures, weaving, computer assemblage, and mixed digital prints with painting. It has been wonderful to share with our community our passion.
